Eastern Spadefoot Toad (Scaphiopus holbrookii) Standing on Pine Needles, Croatan National Forest, North Carolina

I have always liked the crazy eyes of Spadefoot Toads, and was really hoping to find one on this trip. Typically, they live under ground and under cover, and only come out a few select rainy nights to breed. Interestingly, as we were driving along one dry night, I pulled up next to this toad, and with one double-take, realized that it was a Spadefoot instead of the usual Southern Toads we had been finding. Storing him away for a night, I photographed him the next morning on some nice pine needles before letting him free.
